Wroclaw

Wroclaw (pronounced something like Vrotslav) has been wonderful! This is largely thanks to the generosity of Alek, an ex colleague of Ruth's, who has taken us round and shown us an amazing amount of this beautiful city.

It started last night with a concert in the National Music Forum, which is an enormous modern concert hall, where we heard Tchaikovsky's piano concerto and Shostakovich's 10th symphony. They had complimentary wine in the interval (something I'd like to see in every concert hall!).

After that we walked into the town and ate in a restaurant which specialises in Polish Dumplings. They are called piroga, and come in (at least) two main types, baked (what we had and rather like cornish pasties) and boiled, which are smaller and a bit more like ravioli.

Today we were taken on a tour after Alek helped us with the seat reservation for tomorrow's journey to Bratislava. First we rode on a tram, and then walked around the area near the cathedral. Climbing stairs and then taking a lift up the bell tower gave us a panoramic view of the city.

We're now back in our apartment getting ready for a lights and music show this evening, followed by dinner. Tomorrow we have to get up early to travel again. All in all Poland has been a very positive experience. I didn't really know what to expect.

It says - Do it yourself

Wroclaw is known for dwarves which are all over the place.
Even dwarves need cash these days!
